CCNH Difference Makers – Katie Smith

Today, meet Katie Smith, our accounting and billing coordinator in the Finance Department. Katie is the type of person who will drop what she is doing to help you in any way that she can. Not only is she dependable – she’s also a great team player. Let’s learn more about Katie:
How long have you worked at Catholic Charities NH?
I am going on my sixth year at Catholic Charities!
What does your typical day look like?
For me, no one day is never the same. At any given time, there are insurance claims to be billed, invoices and reports to put together, or meeting minutes to review.Sometimes I will step in and help accounts payable as well.
What do you enjoy most about working at Catholic Charities NH?
I enjoy that my day-to-day schedule is different. I like constantly being busy with various things. Our work in finance is mostly “behind the scenes,” but I feel a connection to the difference that we make as a whole organization to individuals across New Hampshire.
What is so unique about the Catholic Charities culture?
Our leadership and management team aren’t out of reach and you can tell how much they care. They take the time to know us individually and invest in who we are as people and professionals.
How has working at Catholic Charities NH helped with your professional development?
I had no experience in finance until I came to CCNH. Before this, I was the Administrative Assistant for Healthcare Services. The former Chief Finance Officer gave me a chance in an accounts payable position after seeing that I was a hard worker, quick learner and good team player. From there, I have been taking on additional responsibilities in my role and learning many new skills.
What have you gained from working at Catholic Charities NH?
I’ve developed a good sense of time management, responsibility and a true understanding of the impact a nonprofit organization can make. I’ve also gained an appreciation for my place in life.
What is most rewarding about your work?
Knowing that what I do in finance is helping to turn the wheels of the organization. Even though I’m not on the frontlines of our work with clients, I know that what I am doing is helping to further our mission.
Why do you love helping others?
There have been times in my life where I have needed help – and being able to give back in any way is fulfilling.
What is one of your favorite memories working at Catholic Charities NH?
It would have to be my first year at our annual Mardi Gras Gala. I got to know the development team and all that goes into putting on a fundraising event. It was amazing seeing in real-time the donations coming in and how those funds would be helping those we serve.

Welcoming, caring, and ambitious.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? What are some of your hobbies?
I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, and I enjoy doing Orangetheory Fitness classes. I also like to try new restaurants in seacoast area with my boyfriend. Lately, we’ve been loving seafood places in Portsmouth!
What do you love about New Hampshire?
I love how versatile New Hampshire is. You can drive an hour and be at the beach, up in the mountains or in the city. I also like that we get to experience all four seasons.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
I love spending time in York Beach with my boyfriend and his family. It’s the perfect place to escape and relax.
What is your favorite motto or quote?
“Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not right, it’s not the end.” – John Lennon
What is your favorite book?
“The Truth About Forever” by Sarah Dessen. I love young adult novels or any mystery thrillers.
Who is a person you admire most?
My older sister – she has three kids under the age of eight, works full-time and does it all with a smile on her face. Her husband is in the Navy and when he is off serving, she does it all. She is a supermom.
Who is a person you’d most like to meet?
Holly Holm – she is a champion kickboxer and Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter. She has made amazing strides in the world of UFC and I admire all she has done.
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
My autobiography would be called: “Figuring it Out as I Go.” This has been my attitude towards everything in life. Even if I don’t know what I’m doing at first, I know I’ll figure it out and learn as I go!
What is one thing people might not know about you (or be surprised to find out)?
I am terrified of horses. I fell off of one as a child and I can’t go near them to this day.
